With dry hire, the machine is usually your responsibility while on your site — ask about damage waiver options and what your excess would be if the machine is damaged. Confirm whether the quoted price includes delivery, collection, fuel and VAT. Fuel policy varies: some companies deliver with a full tank and charge for what you use, while others deliver empty and expect you to supply diesel. Weekly hire rates are typically 3-4 times the daily rate, so longer hires offer significant savings.

Compare quotes from at least three companies and ask about the age and condition of their fleet. Well-maintained machines break down less and are more fuel-efficient. Read Google reviews for comments about delivery punctuality, machine condition and how quickly the company responds to breakdowns. Ask what happens if the machine develops a fault — a good company will send an engineer or replacement within hours, not days. For larger projects, ask about account terms and long-hire discounts.
